On March 23, 160 kids and their families visited Snakeden Branch in Reston for the 9th Annual Reston Kids’ Trout Fishing Day. They caught around 100 fish this year, ranging from 10 to 17 inches long! This event offered a unique opportunity for kids to experience the outdoors and learn about our local natural resources as they fished a section of the stream that Wetland Studies and Solutions restored in 2009 as part of the Northern Virginia Stream Restoration Bank.
WSSI, Reston Association, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Northern Virginia Trout Unlimited stocked this reach of Snakeden Branch with hundreds of Rainbow Trout the day before. The stocked stream made for great fishing that brought smiles to the faces of the new anglers and the experienced ones, and also helped the kids develop an appreciation of and connection with the stream and the environment. The excellent volunteer turnout – the largest to date – helped the morning run smoothly. Also, thanks to the Town of Herndon for lending the fishing poles. Overall, it was a great day, and was full of fun and learning!
Thanks to our co-sponsors Reston Association, Friends of Reston, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Northern Virginia Trout Unlimited for their support! Want to see more?
